Initial consultation and thorough scar analysis
Scar Shouldering with RF is a minimally invasive, advanced scar-revision approach that helps depressed scars with sharp edges and unevenness blend with the surrounding skin. In this treatment, the dermatologist uses radiofrequency energy to carefully level indented scars by shaving down the elevated edges (shoulders) of the scars.
High-frequency radio waves, typically 2 to 4 MHz, are used to cut, coagulate, and ablate the scar tissues. Radiofrequency energy causes water in the scar tissue to vibrate, generating steam. The steam causes ablation of the scarred tissue while coagulating and sealing the underlying blood vessels.
The dermis of the scarred tissue is also heated to stimulate collagen remodeling, skin regeneration, and skin tightening. With fresh collagen and elastin, the skin gets firmer and more elastic. Ultimately, the depth and visibility of scars are reduced, and overall skin texture and appearance improve.
